Wikipedia: Special Treatment for Wikia and some other Wikis
There was a lot of controversy recently when Wikipedia announced that all outbound links from the online encyclopedia would include the nofollow tag. The nofollow tag on a link is said to prevent link spamming since some search engines (Google among them) do not count links containing the tag towards any weighing of the destination page. What this means is that a link from Wikipedia will no longer boost the position of a page in search results, the intention being that this will deter spammers from sneaking links onto Wikipedia.
In Febuary of 2005 the Wikipedia community voted in favor (by a vote of 61% to 39%) of removing the nofollow tags, but this outcome was overruled by Jimbo Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, earlier this year. It seems that while the nofollow tag is added to the standard outbound links, it isn’t applied to inter-wiki links, including links to Wikia, Wikipedia’s for-profit spin off. For example, on the Wikipedia page for Wikia there are a number of links to Wikia pages which do not contain the nofollow tag:
Wookieepedia (home)
The result: wikis included on the white list are granted outbound links that do not contain the “nofollow” tag. These sites benefit directly by receiving higher search engine placements, which is equivalent to additional traffic and authority. Many direct competitors to Wikia, such as Wetpaint, are not included in the white list as of today.
The links to Wikia that don’t have the nofollow tag are created using a special Wikipedia tag wikiasite:. The tag for linking to Wikia pages isn’t mentioned in the help pages for Wikipedia, but there are many references to it throughout Wikipedia and the talk pages on various topics. It is a special type of link known as an Interwiki link, which means that you can use special shortcut tags when linking to other Wiki’s (such as Wikia). The question is, why wouldn’t the nofollow policy apply to inter-wiki links? Specifically since there is an apparent conflict of interest with Wikia, something that you would think that the Wikia team would want to avoid.
The Wikipedia decision to include nofollow tags was not popular and many have pointed out that nofollow is not as effective in preventing link spam as was expected. Wikipedia now has very few outbound links that are honored by search engines, and all of these links are either to other Wikipedia properties, or other wikis via the inter-wiki special links. Why the nofollow policy isn’t applied to links to external wikis we don’t know yet.
To provide an even playing field, Wikipedia should include the nofollow tag for links to all other wikis using the Wikimedia platform.
We’ve emailed Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Wikia CEO Gil Penchina for comment but have not heard back yet.
Update: We have heard back from Jimmy Wales and he has stated that he was opposed to the nofollow policy and had only dropped his opposition to nofollow on advice from Google and others. We stated that Jimmy over-ruled earlier decisions based on the discussion that took place in this thread - in response, Jimmy Wales claims that he did not over-rule the previous decision. The nofollow tag is an important part of the anti-spam strategy at Wikipedia.

Google exec confirms phone in the labs

So it seems that the oft-rumored handset from Google has taken that final leap into the "confirmed" column, though it may not be quite the be-all, end-all device we were expecting. Isabel Aguilera, Google's chief executive in Spain and Portugal, has admitted that the searchmeisters have some mobile goodness in the works but appeared to play down the project, noting that the phone is just one of 18 R&D initiatives the company currently has underway. Furthermore, she mentioned that Google's mobile skunkworks were designed to make their way into developing countries, suggesting that this may not be the Samsung sourced, iPhone-killing monster we'd been getting an earful about as of late. But hey, if Apple intends to turn the iPhone into a multi-device franchise, Google's entitled to do the same, is it not?[Via Gizmóvil, thanks Juan D.]
Frengo Takes Mobile Social Networks to the Next Level

Frengo will announce the launch of its mobile social network today, bringing games and other forms of entertainment directly to your cell phone. Co-founded by industry veterans, including Mahi de Silva and Dan Mosher, Frengo has received $2.3 million in venture capital, led by Index Ventures, Khosla Ventures and private investors.Frengo allows for continued communication amongst friends and across devices, and enables users to even create their own games. Considering the direction in which social networking and the mobile realm are going, it’s no surprise that a product such as Frengo has emerged. Games and other features included in Frengo focus on sports, music and pop culture, as well as useful planning tools and easy integrated widgets for your pages on MySpace, hi5, Piczo and other sites.
The founders’ experience in the mobile and Internet industries proved most helpful when creating Frengo. The company “is partnering with mobile operators such as Boost Mobile” according to a written statement, and has leveraged many of their existing relationships within their field to offer the best product to the consumer, the mobile companies, and game developers as well. Last week, I asked Mosher what the most challenging aspect of creating a social network for mobile phones was. He explained:“The first challenge is getting critical mass of users with all of the noise around social networking. We approach this two ways - one by creating a broad portfolio of games so that we can have at least one game that will be interesting to all potential customers and the other is building functionality that leverages existing social networks (postings on myspace as an example of this) and two by reaching out through many distribution channels (TV, web, carrier, college campus etc..).
The second challenge is just the nature of how phones work - the fact that functionality is limited on SMS versus the web. We approach this challenge but building intelligence into our network that makes it easy for customers to set up groups, manage multiple messaging services across groups and send simple commands into our shortcode that can get distributed across the network to a group of friends.”Needless to say, Frengo offers much in the way of group interaction for existing friends as well as cross-device communication, and aims to provide a more comprehensive option for social networking across our mobile platforms.
Bill Gates can’t play soccer games

During a promotional event celebrating Microsoft’s twentieth anniversary in Mexico, Bill Gates lost to professional Mexican soccer player Rafael Marquez 2-1 in a virtual game of soccer on the 360 (FIFA?). The game was played in front of a crowd of Microsoft employees on three jumbo trons. We bet it was thrilling. And in proper fashion, the two exchanged signed product after the match; Gates giving Marquez a 360 with wired controllers, and Marquez giving Gates a Barcelona camiseta. Yet another example of rich/famous people getting more free stuff.

Crzay Office block

Singapore is building this crazy housing block with four towers kind of hanging off the sides of another, central tower. The 153 meter tall tower will be located at the intersection of Scotts Road and Cairnhill Road, in close proximity to Orchard Road, Singapore’s famous shopping and lifestyle street. With 20,000m² of built floor area, the building will provide 68 high-end apartment units with panoramic views. The design strategically maneuvers within the highly regulated building environment to maximize the full potential of the site: Four individual apartment towers are vertically offset from one another and suspended from a central core.
Pantech To Debut Five New Phones, Tease With International Models at CTIA'07
As expected, Pantech has finally decided to treat our Korean phone envy with five new models that will appear at CTIA 2007. All of them nice-o but with their usual lame names: the C3b, C510, C600, C170 and the C150 pictured here, a nice candybar that comes with MP3 downloading, VGA camera and Bluetooth stereo headphone support, which I have decided to rename the Pantswinger. They will also show some of their latest releases just to keep us drooling, but until Jason gets them in his pants when he arrives in Orlando, we only have a few pics of these C-models and a few other naughty bits. They're right after the jump.
